KUCHING: One in 100 or 1 per cent of the state's population are affected by the mental illness schizophrenia, which is treatable with support, medication and therapy.
From this figure, some 10 per cent are at risk of suicide due to the pressure of discrimination and stigma.
"It is a disorder that imposes a tremendous degree of suffering and social isolation on the people who experience it. Without assistance, it causes disruption in the lives of families, including parents, siblings and children," World Mental Health Day 2014 Campaign organising chairman Dr Gan Chee Kuan told the press after the campaign's launching yesterday.
Dr Gan said currently about 5,000 schizophrenics, including outpatients, are seeking treatment at hospitals here...
